Bachelorette Mint & White Cake Pops!

Nantucket, bike ride, beach, ACK, bachelorette

It’s wedding season! This past weekend I had a bachelorette party for one of my oldest friends (think U6 soccer). Her twin sister’s in-laws have a house on Nantucket and they were gracious enough to let us use it for a long weekend. For those of you who have never been, it’s one of the most beautiful, peaceful, and quaint places in the world. All the houses are shingled and gray from the sun. There are cobblestone streets and local shops. You ride bikes with baskets on them. I know, it’s adorable. We had a great time going to the beach, riding bikes to Siasconset, shopping in town, hanging out at Cisco Brewery, and eating amazing food. Our first dinner was at Cru, right on the docks, and I had the most unbelievable hot butter lobster roll. It seemed small at first, especially for the price (oh yeah, nothing is cheap here), but it was 150% worth it. The lobster was sweet and tender, the butter was hot and salty, and the brioche roll was to die for. It comes with a healthy pile of hand cut fries that were hot and delicious. Go and get it. You won’t be disappointed. We got ridiculous sandwiches from Something Natural (turkey, swiss cheese, sprouts, avocado, cucumbers, carrots, need I go on?), had a delicious brunch at Island Kitchen and ice cream in homemade waffle cones that you can smell down the street at The Juice Bar. Our last dinner was at Straight Wharf near the docks. They serve delicious (and yes, expensive) surf and turf. I ordered the swordfish and was not disappointed. Ah! I want to go back now. Gooey Strawberry Rhubarb Pie-Crisp Hybrid

Strawberry Rhubarb Crumb Pie, strawberry-rhubarb, butter, crumb, berries, summer

I’m way behind. I posted a teaser on Facebook a week ago about this. Last week completely ran away from me! Anyway, believe me when I say that the wait is worth it for this baby.

As I mentioned on FB, I bought some delicious looking strawberries and rhubarb at the store last weekend. One of my favorite flavor combinations, especially in the summertime, is strawberry and rhubarb. The tartness of the rhubarb complements and the sweet strawberries so well! I’ve also been dying to make a pie. The last time I made a pie was probably Christmas. Pies are hard to bring to social gatherings. They’re usually kind of messy (as opposed to a cake or cupcake that can be cut and served cleanly). You have to use a utensil. And they can really only feed up to 12 people, unless your giving out slivers, which is just mean. Continue reading

Memorial Day Whoopie Pies: 4 Ways

whoopie pies, marshmallow, Hershey's, s'mores, graham cracker, cake, filling

I coach a youth lacrosse team from my hometown. This is my 5th year doing it and I have a love-hate relationship with it; about 75:25. I love teaching them something and then seeing them do it on the field successfully. I love when they’re excited to play, when they score a goal, when they make a great assist, when they intercept a pass or stop a goal. When they do well, it’s worth all of the time driving to practices and games all over eastern Mass 6 days a week. It’s worth putting up with chatty 7th and 8th graders during practice. It’s also worth it because I get practice too – I love to bake for them.

Brown Butter Oatmeal Cookies

melted butter, brown butter, browned butter

It’s finally spring in New England! This weekend was beautiful. The windows were open in all the restaurants and we just sat at a table and enjoyed the people-watching in the city on Saturday. Sunday was just as nice and spent the afternoon at my parents’, sharing lobsters (on sale!) and fresh corn. Is there a better warm-weather meal? Maybe, if we added a strawberry-rhubarb crisp for dessert… Hopefully the upcoming long weekend will be much of the same activities!

Sweet Mother’s Day Desserts

Yesterday was Mother’s Day. Did you remember a card? Did you remember to call? I’m fortunate to live very close to my parents so we went to their house for a Mother’s Day cookout with my siblings. I was in Long Island all weekend to be a bridesmaid in one of my best friend’s wedding. It was so much fun and I’m so happy for my beautiful friend. This, however, left me no time to make the summery bundt cake I had planned! Instead, my sister handled the dessert and it was just what Mom wanted.

My first post…and birthday cake!

Butter, sugar, creamed butter

I’ve been thinking about what to bake for my first post. My go-to chocolate chip cookies? Cute little petit fours (I’ve been dying to try)? Gooey cinnamon swirl bread? The possibilities are pretty much endless. My husband, Tyler, has a “little brother” through Big Brother BigSister and it just happened to be his birthday last week. Ty asked if he’d like me to bake anything for him and his request was simple: cake. Vanilla and chocolate, please. Ok, you got it.
